The world of chess is about to witness a historic moment with the launch of the Global Chess League (GCL) – the world's first official franchise chess league of this scale – starting on June 21, 2023. This unique event will see top-tier male and female chess players from across the globe teaming up to compete in a fan-friendly Rapid format.
In a landmark move for the chess community, the GCL's official website will use Chessify's powerful cloud engines for live game analysis, setting a new standard in the industry. Similar to the 2022 FIDE Candidates tournament, each game of GCL will have a dedicated server on Chessify with a speed of 300 MN/s, roughly 20 times faster than the analysis speed provided by other popular broadcasting websites. This real-time, in-depth analysis by Stockfish NNUE will ensure fans and commentators receive the most accurate insights into the game as it unfolds.
The first season of GCL features six robust teams, with six players on each team. After ten rounds, the top two teams will go head-to-head in the final match.
An intriguing aspect of GCL is its unique scoring system which introduces a color bias, rewarding 4 Game Points (GP) for a win with black pieces and 3 GP for a win with white pieces. A draw will earn 1 GP. Naturally, each player's GP will contribute to the team's total Match Points (MP).
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed his excitement about the GCL's unique format, saying, "The scoring system and the schedule have been designed in a manner that gives the fans an exciting experience and keeps them glued to their screens. We are looking forward to 10 days of exciting matches in Dubai."
With its unprecedented blend of top-tier competition, innovative technology, and live game analysis courtesy of Chessify, the Global Chess League promises to be an unforgettable event for chess enthusiasts worldwide. So stay tuned and follow the games on GCL's official website.
