Update Highlights of Stockfish 17
The latest version of the world's strongest chess engine in the world comes with a remarkable set of improvements:
- - Elo and Playing Strength Improvement
In tests against Stockfish 16, this new version gained up to 46 Elo points and managed to win up to 4.5 times more game pairs than it lost.
IMPORTANT: Due to the larger neural network, the newer Stockfish versions, including SF 17, experience a decrease in its NPS (Nodes Per Second) speed. However, this does not indicate any decline in performance; in fact, its analysis quality is higher. To provide flexibility, Chessify will maintain access to the previous version, Stockfish 16.1, allowing users to choose between the two based on their preferences and needs.
- - Higher Efficiency
Stockfish 17 finds high-quality moves more quickly than its previous versions. For example, compared to Stockfish 14, Stockfish 17 can analyze games at least six times faster while maintaining roughly the same quality.
- - Achievements During This Development Period
During the development period of Stockfish 17, the engine secured its 9th consecutive first place in the main league of the Top Chess Engine Championship (TCEC) and its 24th consecutive first place in the main events (bullet, blitz, and rapid) of the Computer Chess Championship (CCC).
- - Improved Engine Lines
With this release, the Stockfish team introduces principal variations (PVs) that are more informative for checkmate and decisive tablebase (TB) scores. In both cases, the principal variation will contain all moves up to checkmate.
- - Performance Optimization for Multiple CPUs
According to Stockfish's official blog, this release improves performance for high-end computers with multiple CPUs, typically a dual-socket architecture with 100+ cores (Chessify uses up to 512 cores and threads depending on the chosen server speed).
This performance boost is due to Stockfish's NumaPolicy setting, which optimizes non-uniform memory access (NUMA). Although speedups of up to 2.8x have been measured, it's important to note that typical consumer hardware won't benefit from this setting.
